Instead of just “reposting” the photos of the day from the photographers on the site, I’m going to flex a little bit of my “editorial” muscle and choose my favorites from the past week.

Recently I have been going through my archives trying to get them organized in an effort to create a portfolio. The portfolio could be going better but while looking through all of the old photos I came across alot of them that I had made frames for in photoshop. The frame below is one I used to really like and it only takes 6 steps to make it happen.

To start open your image in Photoshop, I cropped mine to 1000px wide if you use a different size image adjust all of the sizes accordingly.

Step 1: Create a new blank layer on top of the background layer and make this new layer active.

Step 2: Use ctrl+A to select the entire image then right click on the image and select stroke. set the options to 10 px wide, black, inside, normal and 100%. The most important setting here is the location we set this to inside so that we will have nice sharp corners.

Step 3: Go to select>modify>contract this will make the selection you have going around the whole image evenly smaller so we can make the inner line. I contracted the selection by 50 px.

Step 4: Right click and go to stroke again. This time set the width of the stroke to 3px. This will make the inside black line. Then hit ctrl+D to remove your selection.

Step 5: Use the magic wand tool and click between the 2 lines we have made then in the layers pallet switch to the background layer.

Step 6: Go to filter>blur>gaussian blur I set this to 17.6 but the amount of blur is totally personal preference. Then hit ctrl+D again and we are done. The finished frame can be seen at the beginning of this post.

Starting today, we’ll be highlighting a selection of photos each Monday based on “Photo of the Day” & “Project 365″ themes. For those of you readers who are new to the concept, “Photo of the Day” is a really simple idea, popular among online photography communities, that can be expanded or scaled down depending on its reach but in the end, it comes down to a photographer, editor and/or community selecting a photo that represents either headline news, an aesthetic scene or just a “great photo”, plainly & completely subjective in nature.

This concept is not completely foreign to Cape Photos as resident photographers Don Parkinson, Lenka Mazancova & Ben Allsup have been publishing “Daily” images for a bit of time now. I’ve even joined the fray, albeit briefly.

So without further delay, here are Monday, August 16th’s, Photo(s) of the Day.

Thanks for visiting the new capephotos.net. This site originated as a photo site many years ago the original site can be seen at original.capephotos.net . I built that site from scratch which was a great learning experience but because I had to maintain it and fix all the bugs it was not that much fun to use. So after a lot of thought we have decided to use wordpress as the engine behind the new capephotos. This site is still under development but in the coming weeks you will see photo blogs, tutorial and essays from our select group of photographers ranging from street photography and photojournalism to nature and weddings.

We also have a daily photoblog section which has already launched and can be found at daily.capephotos.net if you are up for the challenge of posting at least one photo every day let us know and we will hook you up with your very own daily blog.
